Following is the set of footnotes associated with research of the transcription of the December 1857 diary entries by Lorette Shepard & John Hamilton. These footnotes are also interspersed and embedded within the transcription.
- Warren Putnams ♢ Warren Putnam (1811-1901) Second oldest son of Peter Putnam and Prudence Johnson, Warren and Sarah Quance had four children who all lived to see the 1900’s: Monroe 18, twins Eveline and Emeline 16, and Emerette 13. They lived on East Road next to Sarah’s mother, Mehitable Powers Quance (1793-1878).
- Berkshire ♢ A Berkshire pig is a breed of pig that originated in the county of Berkshire, England. Its meat today is distributed world wide.
- Gilbert Smith ♢ Gilbert Smith (1813-1866) Son of Elisha Sanford Smith (1786-1866) and Elizabeth Birdsall (1784-1855), Gilbert and Polly Loomis were married in1832 in Alexander. By 1857, they had four children: Egesta, Theodore, Rozilla, and Sanford. The family remained in Genesee County all their lives.
- Wethersfield ♢ Lorette's uncles Martin and Marvin Shepard lived in Weathersfield.
- Showerman’s sister & daughter ♢ Lorette’s grandfather, John Showerman had seven siblings. One of them was Eve Showerman Sale, wife of Peter Sale of Victor, Ontario County, NY. They had a daughter, Eliza Jane Sale, born in 1831
- Christmas tree ♢ The Christmas tree tradition is said to have started in America around 1830 when the Pennsylvania Germans introduced it.
- David Knowlton's ♢ David and John's sister Harriet Hamilton Knowlton, had two daughters, Mary 11 and Ella 6.
- Horehound leaves ♢ Horehound is an herb used for making candy and tea. It is used to ease the effects of coughs and colds.
